Cold Sores
Cold sores are little red or white blisters caused by the herpes simplex virus-1. They typically occur around a person’s mouth, but they can also be found inside the mouth. Cold sores can be tender and cause pain. Most cold sores clear up on their own, usually within 7 to 10 days, but there are topical treatments to relieve symptoms. Avoid spicy or very acidic foods while sores are present. Over the counter lidocaine or benzocaine can be applied for pain. You can apply ice to sooth the infected area or try over-the-counter oral pain relievers like acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
